Google Ads offline conversion import vs enhanced conversions for leads: which one should you use?

Short answer

Import needs the GCLID you kept, enhanced conversions for leads needs a matching email or phone. They fail in different cases, so many accounts run both and add new actions as secondary first.

These two get mixed up constantly, so let me give you the version I wish I'd had, including the parts where they fail.

They solve the same problem: telling Google Ads that a lead turned into a sale. They just find the person in different ways, and the difference decides which one you want.

Offline conversion import matches on the click ID. That's the GCLID, or GBRAID and WBRAID on some iOS clicks. It names the exact click that started the journey, which makes it the most direct match you can get, and it works up to 90 days after the click. How it fails: you didn't keep the click ID with the lead. If it's missing, there's nothing to upload against, and no amount of cleverness recovers it.

Enhanced conversions for leads matches on hashed email or phone from the form. It doesn't care whether you kept the click ID. That's its superpower. The window is shorter, at 63 days. How it fails: the email or phone on the form isn't the one that Google knows, for example a lead who used a work email on your form and a personal one on their Google account. Then there's no match.

So the mistake most people make is treating it as an either/or. They fail in different situations. That means running both covers each other's gaps: the click ID does the heavy lifting when it's there, and the email or phone catches the sales when it isn't. A lost GCLID stops being a lost sale.

A decision guide. Clean forms, simple funnel, reliable GCLID capture, sales cycle under 90 days: import alone is fine. Embedded forms, returning visitors, or a known leak: add enhanced conversions for leads. Sales cycle longer than 63 days: import is the only one that reaches that far, so protect the click ID. Long enough that even 90 days isn't enough: send an earlier stage like booked or qualified while the click is still in range.

One more piece of advice that has saved people real money. Add new conversion actions as secondary first. A secondary action shows up in your reports, but it doesn't steer Smart Bidding. So you can watch the numbers for a couple of weeks and check they make sense before you let them control anything. Switching a primary goal overnight is how people get a scary dip they can't explain.

A word on monitoring, because both methods fail quietly.

For click ID uploads, the number to watch is the share of rows that carry a GCLID at all. If it drifts down, something upstream broke: a form was rebuilt, a redirect was added, a tool changed. For enhanced conversions for leads, the number to watch is the share of leads with a usable email or phone. If forms start accepting blank phones or throwaway emails, matching degrades with no error.

Put both on a monthly checklist. It takes five minutes, and it catches the breakages that would otherwise show up as "Google is performing worse this quarter".

If you take one action from this post, make it this. Open your Google Ads conversion actions and write down, for each one: primary or secondary, what it's based on (click ID or email and phone), and how many rows it received last month. Most accounts discover an action nobody remembers creating, or one that's primary and shouldn't be. That list is the map for everything else, and it takes ten minutes.

Which one are you running, and why? And has either one ever surprised you?

DataCops in short

For this question: DataCops keeps both keys for each lead, the click ID and the hashed email and phone, so whichever Google Ads route fits that lead has what it needs.

DataCops is a tool that makes the ads learn from real sales: it sends booked, showed, won and paid stages from your CRM back to your ad platforms, gives every visit a bot verdict with a Real people only switch per platform, warms up new campaigns with your existing customers, and logs every send. It is not an attribution report.

How DataCops does it

  • The sale after the form. HighLevel natively (lead, booked, showed, won with value, paid; cancelled, no-show and lost are never sent), any other CRM through a private webhook, matched to the click by click ID or hashed email and phone.
  • The click is kept on the server. Click IDs are stored for up to 90 days, so a deal that closes weeks later still finds its click.
  • Real people only. Every visit gets a bot verdict against 360+ billion IPs and 350+ monitoring points, with a Real people only switch per ad platform, off by default. CRM events carry no bot flag.
  • Counted once, logged every time. Pixel and server events share an event ID, and a delivery log shows each send as sent, held, skipped or failed, with the reason.
  • One script, one DNS record. Collection runs on your own domain; with DNS on Cloudflare, the free Worker reads the click at the edge before the page loads.

Best for: ad-funded businesses whose sales close in a CRM or on a call: clinics, home services, agencies, B2B and lead gen.

Ads Warmup: tell the ads who pays

Ads Warmup, DataCops' flagship feature, sends customers you already have to Meta, Google Ads and TikTok before a new campaign spends: upload a CSV (only email is required, up to 20,000 rows), see a 0 to 10 match score per person, pick the event, and send. Rows are dated when you send, and Google Ads credits only people who clicked a Google ad. Preview is free; sending needs a paid plan. Check your own consent basis for the list first. See Ads Warmup.

When not to use DataCops

  • You want a reporting dashboard. DataCops cleans and sends what goes into your ads. It is not a multi-touch reporting layer.
  • Your sales never leave one store checkout. If everything happens in one checkout, the platform's own pixel plus server events may be enough.

Quick reminder of the windows because people mix them up: click ID uploads, up to 90 days after the click. Enhanced conversions for leads, 63 days. If your sales take longer than that, send an earlier stage instead, like booked or qualified.
