The short answer
Server-side GTM changes how your events travel. It does not change which events travel, or what never enters the pipe.
DataCops is a tool that does the ad-conversion job without a container, warehouse or plugin: one script and one DNS record on your own domain, a bot verdict on every visit with a Real people only switch per ad platform, the real sale from your CRM or Shopify sent back to your ads, new campaigns warmed up with the customers you already have, and a log of every send.
How DataCops does it:
- First-party collection, no extra tool. One script and one DNS record put collection on your own subdomain; with your DNS on Cloudflare, the free Worker reads the click at the edge before the page loads. Click IDs are kept on the server for up to 90 days.
- Real people only. Every visit gets a bot verdict against 360+ billion IPs and 350+ monitoring points, with a Real people only switch per ad platform, off by default. Every form email is checked for disposable providers, domains with no mail server and an email risk score.
- The sale after the form. HighLevel natively (lead, booked, showed, won with value, paid), any CRM by webhook, Shopify through the DataCops Shopify app, all matched to the click by click ID or hashed email and phone, and sent to Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and LinkedIn.
- Ads Warmup. Upload your existing customers (up to 20,000 rows), see a 0 to 10 match score per person, and send them to Meta, Google Ads and TikTok so new campaigns start warm.
- Consent, memory and proof. A TCF 2.2 consent banner from your domain with Google Consent Mode v2 on by default, a server-set cookie up to 400 days where enabled, and a delivery log row for every send, counted once against the pixel.
Best for: teams who want better ad conversions without building or maintaining the pipe: lead gen, ecommerce, clinics, home services, B2B and agencies.
The alternatives at a glance:
- DataCops: best if you want server-side without a container. One script, a bot verdict on every visit, consent built in, CRM stages sent to your ads.
- Stape: best for keeping sGTM and not running Google Cloud.
- TAGGRS: best for keeping sGTM at a lower price, hosted in the EU.
- Addingwell: best for high traffic and phone support.
- Tracklution: best for many ad platforms without GTM.
You moved the container. You did not remove it.
Everyone who moves to server-side GTM does it for a good reason: ad blockers and Safari strip browser tags, and a server on your own domain gets the conversion through. That part works.
But look at what you have now. The web container is still there. Next to it sits a second, server container with its own clients, tags, triggers and variables. Under that, a server you pay for and watch, or a host you pay by the request. You did not get out of GTM. You got more of it.
And the two problems that decide what your ads learn are exactly where they were:
- Bots are sent faster. A server tag sends whatever your triggers fire on. A bot that fills your form is a conversion, now delivered reliably.
- The sale is still missing. The booking, the show-up and the won deal happen in your CRM. Your server sees your website, not your pipeline.
Server-side makes your data travel better. It does not make it better data.

The real difference: what goes through the pipe
Server-side, with nothing to host
DataCops is the tracking solution for ad-funded businesses: it keeps bots out of what your ads learn from and sends the sale that happens after the form to Meta, Google Ads, TikTok, LinkedIn, Microsoft Ads, Reddit, Pinterest and X.
DataCops is server-side from a subdomain of your own site, the same first-party path a server container gives you. The difference is that there is no container behind it and no server for you to run. One DNS record and one script, and events arrive at Meta, Google Ads, TikTok, LinkedIn, Microsoft Ads, Reddit, Pinterest and X with the fields each platform wants. When a platform changes a field, you change nothing.
Every visit gets a verdict
A server container fires on events, not on people. Some hosts add a bot score, but turning it into a decision is trigger work you write. DataCops checks every visit for bots, datacenter traffic, VPNs and proxies, and gives you one switch per platform (see click fraud protection). Turn on Real people only for Meta and flagged web conversions never reach Meta. It is off by default, and CRM events carry no bot flag.
The sale happens after the form
A server container sees your website. The money comes later: the booked call, the patient who showed up, the deal marked won. DataCops keeps the ad click for 90 days and matches those stages to it. Install once on your HighLevel agency and pick the clients, or post any CRM's sale to a private webhook. Cancellations, no-shows and lost deals are never sent. Read more on offline conversions and HighLevel conversion tracking.
Consent and deletion are built in
With sGTM you wire a consent banner from another vendor into both containers, and handle deletion requests wherever the data went. DataCops includes a first-party consent manager (IAB TCF v2.2) and checks consent before it sets or sends anything. Visitors can request deletion from your privacy page, Meta, TikTok and LinkedIn deletion requests are acted on automatically, and click IDs, sessions and the click log are deleted after 90 days.
You can see why each event was sent
sGTM preview mode helps while you test. Host logs last days. DataCops writes every conversion as a row per platform (sent, held, skipped or failed) with the reason next to it, so "why did conversions drop last month" has an answer.
The real cost of a server
They are the smallest ones. Answer these with your own.
How many hours will it take to build your web and server containers and the server behind them before the first sale is tracked?
How many hours a month will someone spend keeping it working when Meta, Google or TikTok change something?
If a tag breaks quietly for a week, how many leads never reach your ads? And what is one lead worth to you?
How many sales a month close in your CRM that your ads never hear about?
The last question is the one that matters most. When the ads only see form fills, they learn to find more people who fill in forms, not people who buy. A faster pipe does not fix that. Only the sale does.
The server is the cheap part. The people and the missing sales are the bill.

The 5 server-side GTM alternatives compared
| Best for | Container | Bots | CRM sales | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Server-side without a container | No | Verdict + switch | Native | |
Stape | Keeping sGTM, no Google Cloud | Yes | Score you wire in | Store apps (Pro+) |
TAGGRS | Cheaper sGTM hosting, EU | Yes | Data enrichment only | You build |
Addingwell | High traffic, phone support | Yes | Not stated | You build |
Tracklution | Many ad platforms, no GTM | No | Not stated | Webhooks |
1. DataCops: best for server-side without a container
DataCops replaces the server container instead of hosting it. Collection runs on your own subdomain and conversions go server-side, so you keep what you moved to sGTM for. Then it does the parts sGTM leaves to you: a bot verdict on every visit, consent checked before sending, and the stages after the form from your CRM, matched to the click.
Why people switch to it
- No containers, no servers, no plan pauses to watch
- Real people only per platform
- Booked, showed, won and paid from HighLevel or any CRM
- Google actions start as secondary
Worth knowing
- Real people only is off until you switch it on
- Edge blocking and refund evidence are on Organization
Best for: anyone who wants what server-side promised, without running it.

2. Stape: best for keeping sGTM without Google Cloud
Stape runs your server container so you do not manage Cloud Run, and for most small and mid-size sites it costs less than two servers. Moving to it is mostly a hosting move. The container, its tags and its rules stay yours, and the container pauses past 110% of the plan. Read our full Stape comparison.
Best for: keeping sGTM and not running servers.

3. TAGGRS: best for cheaper sGTM hosting in the EU
Same workflow, same container work. Its bot detection is listed as data enrichment, not a filter that stops bot events.
Best for: teams where sGTM is right and only the hosting bill is wrong.

4. Addingwell: best for high traffic and phone support
Addingwell has the most generous free tier of the hosts and real people on email, chat and phone. Still a container you build and maintain.
Best for: teams who want someone to call when the container breaks.

5. Tracklution: best for many ad platforms without GTM
Tracklution has no container either, and the widest connector list here: Meta, Google Ads, TikTok, LinkedIn, Microsoft, Pinterest, Snapchat, Reddit and more. Offline conversions come in by webhook. It is priced by events, and agency plans are quote only.
Best for: teams who need Microsoft Ads or many networks without GTM.
How to choose
Pick DataCops if
- You moved to server-side for ad conversions, and that is most of what it does.
- Your sales close after the form: a booking, a call, a visit, a signed deal.
- You or your agency run HighLevel, or want this done without a specialist.
When not to use DataCops
- Server-side GTM can do almost anything. If you send to many non-ad tools or run custom logic in tags, a container gives you that freedom.
- You need custom tag logic or non-ad destinations. DataCops sends to ad platforms. If you feed other tools from a server container or pipeline, keep it for those.
What's your actual goal?
Nobody wants a server container. You want five things:
- Capture every lead and sale, including the ones ad blockers and Safari hide. Server-side does this.
- Send them to your ad platforms, so Meta, Google Ads, TikTok, LinkedIn, Microsoft Ads, Reddit, Pinterest and X learn who buys. Server-side does this, once you build the tags.
- Include the sales that happen offline, on a call, in a clinic, in your CRM. Server-side does not.
- Keep bots out, so the platforms do not learn from fake leads. Server-side does not.
- Stay compliant, with consent checked and data deleted on request. Server-side leaves it to you.
The traditional way, with sGTM
- Keep your web container and add a GA4 or Data Tag client.
- Create a server container.
- Deploy it on Cloud Run (two servers or more) or pay a host.
- Point a subdomain at it, publish both containers.
- Add a server tag, token and field mapping per ad platform.
- Set shared event IDs so nothing counts twice.
- Wire consent into both containers.
- Build bot rules and a CRM flow, if you build them at all.
- Watch the server, and maintain both containers forever.
With DataCops
- Add one script and one DNS record.
- Connect each ad platform with one click.
- Switch on the consent manager.
- Switch on Real people only.
- Connect HighLevel or your CRM webhook.
Then run your business. It is server-side from your own subdomain already. No server, no container.
Why people leave server-side GTM
- Two containers to keep in sync. Every new event is a change in the web container and the server container.
- A server to own. Scaling, updates, outages and the cloud bill are yours, or you pay a host by the request.
- Hosts pause. Stape pauses the container past 110% of the plan; on Pro, at once. A traffic spike or a bot wave is exactly when that happens.
- Only specialists can touch it. Server containers are harder to debug than web ones, and fewer people know them.
- Bots and CRM sales are still your build. Server-side did not change either.
Offline conversions: what the server never sees
| Business | What the server container sees | What DataCops adds |
|---|---|---|
| Clinics, dental, med spa | Booking form | Booked, showed, treatment paid |
| Home services, roofing, solar | Quote request | Estimate booked, job won with its value |
| Agencies running client ads | Form fills per client | Every client's booked, showed, won and paid |
| B2B and SaaS | Demo request, signup | Qualified lead, trial, paid, by webhook |
| Legal, finance, high-ticket services | Enquiry | Consult booked, client signed |
Ads Warmup: tell the ads who pays
Server-side GTM forwards what your site or store produces. A new ad account, pixel or campaign has nothing yet, so it pays to learn from scratch. That is a job a pipe cannot do, because the customers you already have never visit on command.
Ads Warmup, DataCops' flagship feature, sends them to your ad platforms before a campaign spends:
- Upload a customer list. A CSV of past buyers, old leads or booked calls. DataCops reads your columns; only email is required.
- See a match score for every person. An estimate from 0 to 10 from email, phone, name, location, click ID and customer ID, before anything is sent.
- Pick the event. Purchase, Lead, Complete registration, Add to cart or Schedule.
- Send server-side. Up to 20,000 people per upload to Meta, Google Ads and TikTok, with a sent, skipped or failed result per person. Google Ads credits only people who clicked a Google ad.
Each row is dated when you press send, not with the old sale date, so it gives a new campaign real customers to learn from on day one. Preview is free; sending needs a paid plan.
What else a pipe never does
- Capture at the edge. With DNS on Cloudflare, the free, optional DataCops Cloudflare Worker reads click IDs and UTMs off the first request, before the page or any script runs. It captures; it does not block.
- Keep the click on the server. gclid, wbraid, gbraid, fbclid, ttclid and li_fat_id are stored for up to 90 days, so a deal that closes weeks later still finds its click. A signed server-set cookie lasts up to 400 days where enabled.
- Check the lead's email. Fixed rules, not guesses: disposable providers, domains with no mail server and an email risk score. With LeadCops (Business and up), a lead that fails is held and never billed.
- Install on Shopify. The DataCops Shopify app adds a web pixel and a theme app embed, so every paid order reaches your ads, express checkouts included. See Shopify Conversions API.
- Hand evidence to Google. On the Organization plan, the fraud refund report exports bot-flagged Google Ads clicks in the format Google's Click Quality form asks for. You attach it; Google decides.

"15 minutes to get server-side tracking live. After 3 days failing with another app and a DIY server-side Google Tag Manager, that alone sold me. Then support jumped on a Google Meet with me on a Sunday afternoon to finish the job."Andrew Forsyth, Chief Executive Officer, Zeald
What to know before you switch
- Server-side GTM can do almost anything. If you send to many non-ad tools or run custom logic in tags, a container gives you that freedom.
- Moving means pausing tags, not deleting them. Pause the server tags DataCops replaces, compare for two weeks, and only then shut the server down. Each conversion is counted once by its event ID.
- Setup tip: write down what the container did. List every tag and the consent rules it followed. DataCops re-checks consent on the server before every send, so you can compare like for like.
Whatever you switch from, DataCops runs the whole chain in one tool: sends to 8 ad platforms (Meta, Google Ads, TikTok, LinkedIn, Microsoft Ads, Reddit, Pinterest and X), Real people only per platform (off by default), a built-in consent banner with Google Consent Mode v2 and a server re-check before every send, CRM sales sent back to the ads, a delivery log with a reason for every row, and each conversion counted once by event ID or order ID. On the Organization plan you also get Cloudflare edge blocking and Google refund evidence.
Moving off server-side GTM
- Add DataCops next to your containers. One script, one DNS record. Leave sGTM running.
- Send each conversion from one place only. Pick what DataCops sends and pause those server tags.
- Compare for two weeks in Meta Events Manager and Google Ads, including what DataCops skipped as bots.
- Connect your CRM to add the stages the server never saw.
- Shut down the server or cancel the host when the numbers look right.

Server-side GTM alternatives: FAQ
Can I warm up a new campaign with my existing customers?
Yes, with DataCops Ads Warmup. Upload a CSV of past buyers, old leads or booked calls (only email is required, up to 20,000 rows), see a match score from 0 to 10 for every person, and send them to Meta, Google Ads and TikTok as fresh signal, dated when you send. Google Ads credits only people who clicked a Google ad. Preview is free; sending needs a paid plan.
When should I keep Server-side GTM instead of switching?
Server-side GTM can do almost anything. If you send to many non-ad tools or run custom logic in tags, a container gives you that freedom.
What is the best server-side GTM alternative?
DataCops, for most ad-funded businesses. It replaces server-side GTM and the rest of the stack: one script, a bot verdict on every visit, a built-in consent manager, server-side sends to 8 ad platforms, and your CRM sales matched to the ad click. It depends on which part you want to leave. If you only want to stop running Google Cloud, a host like Stape, TAGGRS or Addingwell runs the same container for you. If you want to stop maintaining a container at all, DataCops and Tracklution have none. If your sales close in a CRM and you want booked, showed, won and paid sent to your ads, DataCops is built for that.
Is Stape a server-side GTM alternative?
Stape is a host for server-side GTM, not a replacement. You still build and maintain the server container. See our Stape alternatives page.
Can I do server-side tracking without Google Tag Manager?
Yes. DataCops sends conversions server-side from a subdomain of your own site with one script and one DNS record, to Meta, Google Ads, TikTok, LinkedIn, Microsoft Ads, Reddit, Pinterest and X, with no tags, triggers or variables.
Is server-side tracking enough to fix my ad data?
It fixes one thing: ad blockers and Safari stripping browser tags. It does not stop bots from being sent as conversions, and it does not add the sales that happen later in your CRM. Those decide what your ads learn.
Does DataCops block bots?
Each ad platform connection has a Real people only switch. It is off by default. When you turn it on, web conversions flagged as bots are not sent to that platform. Events from your CRM carry no bot flag, so the switch does not filter those.
Can DataCops send offline and CRM conversions?
Yes. DataCops keeps the ad click for 90 days and matches later CRM events to it. With HighLevel, an agency installs once, picks the clients, and leads, booked, showed, won with value and paid go back to each client's ads. Other CRMs connect by webhook, Zapier, Make or n8n.
Will switching change my Google Ads bidding?
Not by itself. The conversion actions DataCops creates in Google Ads start as secondary, so bidding does not change until you make one primary.
Which ad platforms does DataCops send to?
Eight: Meta, Google Ads, TikTok, LinkedIn, Microsoft Ads, Reddit, Pinterest and X. Meta, Google Ads, TikTok, LinkedIn and X connect with one click. Microsoft Ads, Reddit and Pinterest connect with an API key. Microsoft Ads uses its UET Conversions API, which Microsoft runs as a pilot, so ask your Microsoft account manager to turn it on.
When should I keep server-side GTM?
Keep it if you have someone fluent in GTM, run custom tags or vendors no managed tool supports, or need full control over infrastructure and data routing. Then the only question is who hosts it.
